Why are fans or spectators called patrons at the Masters?
The use of the term patron is meant to convey a sense of respect and courtesy towards the individuals who attend the tournament.
Augusta National Golf Club places a strong emphasis on tradition and etiquette.
When Augusta National first opened in the 1930s co-founder Clifford Roberts wanted to recognize fans as consumers of an experience rather than a fan or spectator.
Additionally, the use of the term "patron" is meant to differentiate those who attend The Masters from those who attend other sporting events.
What are some of the rules for patrons (spectators) at the Masters?
Why did Tiger Woods withdraw from the 2023 Masters?
Tiger explained that he had a recurrence of plantar fasciitis, a very painful foot complaint.
Significant rain led to a very heavy golf course and a walk, challenging for 2023 Tiger in good conditions, that much more difficult.
It's likely his walking gait would have been impacted and this may have caused foot pressure that brought on the plantar fascitis.
Why does the Masters Champion receive a green jacket?
When the Augusta co-founder Bobby Jones visited Royal Liverpool in 1937 he noticed that the past captains all wore red blazers when sitting for dinner. He adapted the idea for Augusta National members and Masters Champions.
Bobby Jones presented the idea to the Augusta National Golf Club’s Chairman Clifford Roberts who decided to introduce the Green Jacket as a way to distinguish members of the club during tournament week.
In 1949 it was decided to award the Masters winner with a Green Jacket as well. The winner that year was Sam Snead.
The champion can take the Green Jacket home but must return it to the clubhouse one year after his victory. Although it remains his personal property it is stored with all the other champions' jackets in a specially designated cloakroom.
The Green Jacket is reserved for Augusta National members and golfers who win the Masters.
Tradition dictates that the defending champion help the new winner into his Green Jacket at the presentation ceremony held after the final round.
The Green Jackets are worn to the Champions Dinner which is held on the Tuesday before each tournament. Invited guests are past champions and certain board members of the Augusta National Golf Club.
Why is Gary Player’s son Wayne Player banned from the Masters at Augusta?
Wayne Player, the son of golfer Gary Player, was banned from attending the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club after he was accused of involvement in a ticket-scalping scheme.
According to reports, Wayne Player was arrested in August 2021 and charged with fraud and money laundering related to the sale of Masters tickets on the black market.
The charges allege that he purchased tickets to the tournament at face value and then resold them at a significant markup, netting more than $1 million in profits over several years.
After news of the charges became public, Augusta National Golf Club announced that Wayne Player had been banned from attending the Masters Tournament and that the club had revoked his access to the grounds.
Why is the Masters called the Masters?
Clifford Roberts (co-founder of Augusta National) liked this name because the players were the “Masters of Golf”
The Masters was the brainchild of legendary amateur golfer Bobby Jones and investment dealer Clifford Roberts, who co-founded the Augusta National Golf Club in 1933.
When the tournament was first held, it was called the “Augusta National Invitation Tournament”. Bobby Jones preferred this name, but Roberts wanted to call it “The Masters” …. after several years, Roberts got his way, and it has been known as the Masters since 1939.
