What is the Ryder Cup?
24 of the best players from Europe and the United States go head-to-head in match play competition.
The Ryder Cup pits a USA team against a team of European golfers and is played every two years on alternating continents. It's named after the English businessman, Samuel Ryder, who donated the trophy in 1927.
The selection process for the teams differs slightly:
- For the upcoming event the US Team will include the top six players in the points rankings along with six captain's picks.
- The European Team will comprise the first four players from the European Points List, the next five players from the World Points List and three wild cards.
Ryder Cup Format: Each of the first two days include fourball and foursomes matches: 4 each morning and 4 each afternoon. The final day is reserved for 12 singles matches.
Ryder Cup Scoring: Each match is worth one point. Drawn matches earn ½ point for each side. The first team to reach 14 ½ points wins the Ryder Cup. If the end result is 14 points all, the team holding the Ryder Cup retains it.

Who was the Ryder Cup Captain for Team Europe 2023?
Who was the Ryder Cup Captain for Team USA 2023?
Why is the Ryder Cup called that?
An English businessman, Samuel Ryder, donated a gold trophy for the first trans Atlantic golf competition in 1927.
Samuel Ryder only took up the game of golf at 50 years of age and quickly became an enthusiast. With his brother, James, he began sponsoring golf tournaments in 1923.
The idea of a match between American and British professionals first came up in 1926 and in that year there was a match, but not an official one. The first official match took place in 1927.
Why was Henrik Stenson stripped of the 2023 Ryder Cup captaincy?
Henrik Stenson was stripped of the 2023 Ryder Cup captaincy because he joined the LIV Golf Invitational Series.
2023 Ryder Cup: Date: 29 September to 1 October 2023. Location: the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Ital.
“Ryder Cup Europe today confirms that Henrik Stenson’s tenure as Captain of Team Europe for the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome, Italy from September 25 – October 1, 2023, has been brought to an end with immediate effect.” - Statement from Ryder Cup Europe on 20th July 2022.
Will LIV golfers be allowed to play in the 2023 Ryder Cup?
At the time of writing the question of LIV golfers playing in the Ryder Cup was unresolved. When asked the question in late April the US Team Captain, Zach Johnson, said "No decisions have been made".
It's likely the apparent harmony amongst players at the 2023 Masters along with the performances of the LIV golfers, most notably Koepka and Mickelson, has increased the possibility of LIV golfers playing in the Ryder Cup.
If allowed in, the US Team would have to consider Koepka and Mickelson along with others like DeChambeau and Reed. The European Team would be tracking current performances of stalwarts like Garcia, Poulter, Westwood, and Casey.
