Olympic Golf

Both the men’s and women’s 2024 Paris Olympic Golf competitions are held at Le Golf National in Guyancourt.

Le Golf National is located at 2 Av. du Golf, 78280 Guyancourt, approximately 25 kilometers southwest of central Paris, France.

The men's event will start on 1st August 2024 with the women's side scheduled to start six days later.

The event will feature a total of 120 players (60 per gender) across the two medal events.

Golf National was designed in 1991 and is owned by the French Golf Federation.

The course was designed by architects Hubert Chesneau and Robert Von Hagge, with European Golf Design assisting in the project.

Le Golf National offers memberships, it is also open to the public, allowing golf enthusiasts to experience a world-class course.

Golf Courses at the Le Golf National:

• L'Albatros (The Albatros Course): The championship course, known for its challenging design and hosting major tournaments.
• L'Aigle (The Eagle Course): A slightly less demanding course, but still offers a quality golfing experience.
• L'Oiselet (The Birdie Course): A nine-hole course suitable for beginners and those looking for a shorter round of golf.

Tournaments held at the Le Golf National

• The Ryder Cup 2018: One of the most prestigious events in golf, where Team Europe defeated Team USA.
• The Open de France: One of the oldest national open championships in Europe, held annually at Le Golf National since 1991, with few exceptions.
• The Olympic Golf Competition: Le Golf National is set to host the golf events during the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Both the men’s and women’s Olympic competitions were held at Kasumigaseki Country Club in Kasahata, Saitama, Japan, about 35 miles northwest of downtown Tokyo.

Kasumigaseki Country Club is a 36 hole golf club surrounded by the rich, green forest of the Musashino Hills.

The private golf club opened on October 6, 1929. It was the first golf course in Saitama.

Kasumigaseki Country Club hosted the Canada Cup in 1957, the Japan Open Golf Championship in 1933, 1956, 1995, and 2006, as well as the Asian Amateur Championship in 2010.

The East Course was redesigned by Tom and Logan Fazio in October 2016. It successfully retains the classic look and feel of the previous remodelling work by C.H. Alison.

The West Course was designed by Seiichi Inoue. In spite of its elegant look, the course presents a challenge in that many holes require accurate shots from the tee. Lakes and creeks on the back 9 provide additional beauty while challenging the player to hit dead on.

The top 15 ranked players at the end of the qualifying periods were eligible for the Olympics, however there was a limit of four players in each competition from any given country. Beyond the top 15, players were eligible based on the world rankings, with a maximum of two eligible players from each country that did not already have two or more players among the top 15. The host country was guaranteed a spot, as were each of the five continental regions.

Qualifications for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics Golf Competitions was based on the world ranking as at 21 June 2021 for men and 28 June 2021 for women. A total number of 60 players qualified in each of the men's and women's events.

Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen, Martin Kaymer, Dustin Johnson, Tyrrell Hatton, Matt Fitzpatrick and Lee Westwood.

The 2021 Olympic golf competitions will be held 29 July - 8 August at Kasumigaseki Country Club in Japan.

The 2020 Tokyo Games have already been postponed once, for a year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They are now scheduled for July 23-Aug. 8 with restrictions on athletes’ movement and where they can stay.

Dustin Johnson, the No. 2 player in the world, had already said he would not be going because the Tokyo Olympics are crammed into an already busy golf schedule.

A field of 60 players qualified based on the world ranking. Read more about how to qualify for the 2021 Olympic golf competition.

Golf returned to the Olympic Games in 2016 at Rio de Janeiro after a 112 year absence.

Interestingly golf almost returned to the Olympics two decades earlier.

After bringing the 1996 Olympics to Atlanta, Billy Payne, then the head of the Atlanta Games organizing committee, turned his attention to making golf an Olympic sport again.

He even got in contact with the then Augusta National chairman to agree that Augusta should be the host venue.

Unfortunately, due to various circumstances, the opportunity never eventuated.

In January 1993 Billy Payne withdrew his proposal.

The 1900 Summer Olympics - the second of the modern Olympics - was the first Olympic Games to include golf.

• Only four countries participated in golf at the 1900 Olympics; Great Britain, France, Greece, and the United States.
• While the men’s competition was played over 36 holes the women’s event was only contested over 9 holes.
• In 1900 the Olympics was not as strong an event as it is now and many of the golfers participating did not realize they were competing in the Olympics. They thought it was ‘just’ a golf tournament.
• Both the men’s and the women’s competitions were won by participants from the U.S.
• The International Golf Federation has a good article with more information.
• An entertaining article by Bill Mallon has further information about the history of golf in the Olympics.

After a long absence, golf returned to the Olympic program for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games and has been included since.

Format

• Men's and Women's Competitions: There are separate events for men and women.
• Stroke Play: Both competitions use a 72-hole stroke play format over four days, with the player with the lowest total score winning the gold medal.

Participation

• Field Size: Each competition typically features 60 players.
• Qualification: Players qualify based on their world rankings, with a maximum of four players per country if they are all ranked within the top 15, and a maximum of two players per country otherwise.

Notable Moments

• 2016 Rio Games:
  • Men's Gold: Justin Rose (Great Britain)
  • Women's Gold: Inbee Park (South Korea)
• 2020 Tokyo Games (held in 2021 due to the pandemic):
  • Men's Gold: Xander Schauffele (USA)
  • Women's Gold: Nelly Korda (USA)

The Men's individual Golf Tournament will were held from 29 July to 1st August 2021 and the Women’s individual Golf Tournament were held from 4th to 7th August 2021.

Golf at the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan featured two events, one each for men’s and women’s individual 72-hole stroke-play.

The Olympic competitions were played at the Kasumigaseki Country Club in Kasahata, Saitama, Japan, about 35 miles northwest of Tokyo.

Justin Rose shot a hole in one during his first round at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Golf returned back to the Olympic programme after a 112-year absence.

The Rio de Janeiro Olympic Golf Course was built entirely with private funding.

On the 189 yard par3 fourth hole Rose used a 7-iron to hole his first shot.

“It’s one of the icing on the cake moments. When you’re the first to do anything no one can ever take that away from you. That was definitely a cool moment.” - Justin Rose

Justin Rose became the first Olympic Gold Medallist in Golf for 112 years. He beat Henrik Stenson by 2 shots. Matt Kuchar came third 3 shots behind.

The competition was played on a new course designed by Gil Hanse. After the Summer Olympics ended, the golf course was opened to the public.
