Bryson DeChambeau's physics major at Southern Methodist University significantly influenced his unique approach to golf in several ways:

Single-length irons: DeChambeau developed a set of irons that are all the same length, based on his understanding of physics principles. This allows him to maintain a consistent swing plane and posture for all iron shots.

Swing mechanics: He applies physics concepts to his golf swing, using what he calls a "zero shifting motion" or single-plane swing. This technique is based on the book "The Golfing Machine" by Homer Kelley, which DeChambeau studied intensively.

Ball balancing: DeChambeau uses Epsom salt solutions to check the balance of his golf balls, identifying any manufacturing imperfections that could affect ball flight.

Analytical approach: His physics background enables him to analyze various aspects of the game, from club design to swing mechanics, using scientific principles.

What is the PIP, or Player Impact Program, for the PGA?

In 2021 the PGA introduced the PIP to recognize (and reward financially) players on their tour that have a positive impact, not just through their play but also other factors including popularity and social media engagement.

The PIP is an effort by the PGA Tour to keep its top players engaged and committed to playing on the tour, as well as to generate more interest and excitement around the sport.

The program is based on a number of metrics, including a player's Q Rating, which measures their popularity with fans, and their M Score, which measures their digital and social media presence.

The PIP has been met with some controversy, with some players questioning the criteria used to determine the bonus payouts and whether the program is fair to all players on the tour. However, the PGA Tour has defended the PIP as a way to reward the tour's most valuable assets and to help grow the game of golf.

In the first year, 2021, Tiger Woods picked up $15M after winning the PIP. In 2022 the program went from 10 players to 20 and from $40M in 'prizemoney' to $100M.

Why is Bryson DeChambeau known as The Mad Scientist of Golf?

He is known as ‘Mad Scientist’ due to his unique approach to the game.

Bryson DeChambeau was born in Modesto, California. He attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas and studied physics.

He is known to thoroughly test his golf balls. He puts them in a bowl of Epson Salts to balance each one. He spins the ball and the out-of-balance one will wobble to where the low point or heavy side of the ball is due to the centre of gravity not being in the exact centre. He then also puts 60 milligrams of lead tape on the ball to see if it flips back over. If the ball is more than 60mgs out of balance then he won’t play it. Supposedly four out of every dozen are taken out.

All of his irons and wedges are 37.5 inches long, the same as a 7 iron. They also all have the same lie and bounce angles. This is to help him with his one plane swing.

He uses JumboMax golf grips on his clubs which are the largest on the market. They are meant to help him hold the club in his palms.
