Has the US PGA Championship always been played as stroke play?
No. The US PGA Championship was originally a match play format when first held in 1916 and continued as matchplay up until 1957. It became a 72 hole stroke play event in 1958.
In 1957 the event started to lose money.
In 1958 the PGA decided to change the format to stroke play, with the standard 72-hole format of 18 holes per day for four days, Thursday to Sunday.
Main reason for the format change was that network television broadcasters were preferring a 4 day event building up to a large group of well-known contenders playing on the final day.

What prevented Ben Hogan from attempting to complete the Grand Slam of golf by winning the US PGA Championship in 1953?
The PGA Championship overlapped the Open.
Having won the Masters, the US Open Championship at Oakmont Country Club and the Open at Carnoustie, he was unable to compete in the US PGA Championship as the PGA Championship overlapped the Open.
The US PGA Championship was conducted from July 1 to July 7 and the Open ran from July 6 to July 10. Unbelievable but true.
Hogan often declined to play in the PGA Championship and skipped it more often as his career wore on.
One of the reasons was that the PGA Championship was, until 1958, a match play event, and Hogan's particular skill was "shooting a number". He was meticulously planning and executing a strategy to achieve a score for a round on a particular course.
Another reason was that the PGA required several days of 36 holes per day competition, and after his 1949 car accident, Hogan struggled to manage more than 18 holes a day.

- Won 9 major championships, tied for 4th all-time
- One of only 5 players to win all four major tournaments (Masters, U.S. Open, The Open Championship, PGA Championship)
- Won 64 PGA Tour events overall

Influence on Golf Swing Theory
- Developed a very precise, repeatable swing
- Wrote influential instructional books like "Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf"
- Known for his intense practice regimen and dedication to perfecting his technique
The Ben Hogan Golf Equipment Company
- Founded by Hogan in 1953 to produce high-quality golf clubs
- Targeted toward skilled players
- Went through several ownership changes over the decades
- Brand discontinued in 2008 by Callaway, but name was later licensed for new product lines
- Company ceased operations in 2022 after final bankruptcy

Why did players wear a yellow ribbon during the 2018 USPGA Championship?
Jarrod Lyle, former PGA Tour member from Australia, died aged 36 after a battle with cancer. Players showed their support through the wearing of a yellow ribbon on their caps.
- Jarrod was first diagnosed with and fought leukemia while still a teenager and he still managed to follow his dream and become a professional golfer good enough to earn his card on the PGA tour.
- He played on the tour for seven years.
- Three of many touching moments from his peers:
- Bryson DeChambeau won $25,000 for winning the Long Drive competition on the Wednesday. He donated to the fund “Jarrod Lyle’s girls”.
- Rickie fowler had been scheduled to wear a blue shirt on the Thursday of the USPGA but switched to a yellow shirt in recognition of Jarrod. He shot a 5 under, 65. Well done Rickie!
- Tiger Woods gets lots of ‘help’ requests – naturally he would. And so easiest for him to have a blanket rule of ‘No’. He broke that rule in 2012 when he wore a yellow Luek the Duck pin on his hat out of respect for Lyle. An in-depth article touches on Tiger’s kind act and looks in some detail at Jarrod’s life.
Career Highlights
Nationwide Tour Success: Lyle achieved significant success on the Nationwide Tour (now known as the Korn Ferry Tour) in 2008, where he won twice. His victories came at the Mexican Open and the Knoxville Open, and he finished fourth on the money list that year, earning his PGA Tour card for 2009.
PGA Tour: Lyle played several seasons on the PGA Tour. His best finish was a tie for fourth place at the 2012 Northern Trust Open. He also made headlines with a memorable hole-in-one at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in 2011 on the par-3 16th hole, known as the "Stadium Hole".
