Arnold Palmer grew up in Latrobe, Pennsylvania
After learning the game of golf from his father, Arnold ended up playing golf for Wake Forest University. Probably more so than any other golfer in history, how Arnie grew up defined him as a player. Golf was known as an elitist sport, but Palmer became immensely popular because of his humble beginnings.
Upon turning professional in 1954 Arnold quickly became a crowd favorite, his fans were known as “Arnie’s Army”.
Arnold Palmer’s greatest rival was Jack Nicklaus who famously said “Arnold transcended the game of golf. He was more than a golfer or even a great golfer. He was an icon. He was a legend. Arnold was someone who was a pioneer in his sport. He took the game from one level to a higher level, virtually by himself.”
