More about the International Golf Club

The club's history dates back to 1899 when it operated as a 9 hole golf course.

Located in Bolton, Massachusetts, just 35 miles northwest of Boston, The International Golf Club stands as a beacon of pure golf excellence steeped in over 120 years of rich history. Spread across 660 acres of rolling New England terrain, this private club offers an unparalleled golf experience featuring two distinct and championship-caliber 18-hole courses: The Pines and The Oaks.

The International traces its roots back to 1899 when it was founded as the Runaway Brook Golf Club, a modest nine-hole public course. Over the decades, it evolved through visionary ownership and architectural transformations. In the 1950s, Albert Surprenant acquired the club and commissioned renowned architect Geoffrey Cornish to design what became the Pines Course, which opened in 1955. Later, in 1961, International Telephone & Telegraph (ITT) took ownership and added the Oaks Course, crafted by famed architect Tom Fazio, further elevating the club’s stature.

Today, under the stewardship of Escalante Golf since 2021, both courses have undergone meticulous redesign and restoration—most notably the Pines Course by the celebrated Coore & Crenshaw team, who infused the layout with strategic sandy waste areas, native pitch pines, and fescue grasses, creating a course that honors its Golden Age architectural heritage while offering a modern, walkable, and engaging golf experience.

Now there are two courses, The Pines Course and The Oaks Course.

Pines Course

The Pines Course was built in 1901. In 1972, Robert Trent Jones was contracted to enhance the experience and modify many of the slick greens and challenging bunkers.

The Pines Course is a formidable test stretching over 8,300 yards from the back tees, once known as the longest 18-hole course in the United States. Its redesign has softened the brutal length while enhancing strategic playability, with wide fairways framed by natural grasses and a variety of bunkers that demand thoughtful shot-making. The course’s bentgrass greens are large and undulating, requiring precision on approach and putting.

Oaks Course

The Oaks Course which opened in 2001, is a par 72 and 7,112 yards long from the back tees. The course was originally designed by Tom Fazio.

The Oaks Course, opened in 2001, offers a contrasting parkland style with beautifully manicured waste areas and classic white sand bunkers. Measuring nearly 7,000 yards, it blends seamlessly with the rolling topography, providing a visually stunning and enjoyable round for players of all skill levels. The Oaks has hosted the 2022 LIV Golf Invitational Boston, attracting some of the biggest names in professional golf.

Hosting Professional Golf

In 2022, The International gained global attention by hosting the LIV Golf Invitational Boston on the Oaks Course, showcasing its ability to stage high-profile professional events. The club’s blend of history, championship design, and natural beauty positions it as one of New England’s foremost golf venues.
