What is a slice in golf?

A slice happens when there is side spin on the golf ball which causes the ball to curve to the right for a right-handed player and to the left for a left-handed golfer. Sidespin to the right is caused by an open clubface (pointed right) relative to the path the club head is travelling on impact.

More about the slice

The slice is one of the most widespread problems in golf. A study found that 60% of golfers with an average score of 100+ tend to miss the ball right of the target more than half the time.

One of the biggest factors that contribute to a slice are an open clubface or an over the top swing.
