A shotgun start in golf is when all the competitors in a tournament start at the same time on different holes around the course.
Group one starts on the first hole, group two starts on the second hole and so forth.
The benefit of starting all groups at the same time is that everyone finishes at the same time. This is especially helpful when there's a presentation after the game.
Traditionally such tournaments are started with a shotgun or horn sound but in some competitions the players simply all know to begin at the same designated time.
