More about the World Golf Championships Match Play

16 groups of four players start the tournament. Each group has a seeded player, 1 through 16.

The groups then play in a round-robin format over Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday - every player playing each of the others in their group

Players earn one point for a win, and half a point for a tie.  Only the group winner progresses to the round of 16.

If two or more players are tied at the top of a group, there is a sudden death stroke play tie-breaker played.

From there it's a knock out tournament. The round of 16 and quarterfinals are played on Saturday. On Sunday we see the semi-final, the third-place playoff and the Final.

All matches are over 18 holes.

The tournament was first held in 1999. The winner receives a Wedgwood trophy named the Walter Hagen Cup.
