The Club was founded by the surgeon Laidlaw Purves in 1887. It was intended to be a rival to St Andrew’s in the South of England.

The Royal St. George’s Golf Club is consistently ranked among the top courses in the world.

The club is full of history. In 1894 The Royal St. George’s Golf Club hosted the first Open Championship played outside Scotland.

Overall, 14 Open Championships have been played at the club. That's more than any other course outside Scotland.

The Royal St. George’s Golf Club is host to the 149th Open Championship in 2021.

Author Ian Fleming used the Royal St George's course under the name "Royal St. Marks" in his 1959 James Bond novel Goldfinger. Fleming was the Captain-elect of the Club at the time.
