The first British Open Championship was played on October 17, 1860, at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. Only eight players were competing.
The tournament is calle the Open because it is in theory it is open to professional and amateur golfers. In practice the event is a professional tournament with a small number of leading amatures being invited to play at.
Collin Morikawa, who won the 149th Open at Royal St George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, England.
In 2022 the total purse will be US$10,750,000.
