More about the Walker Cup

The official name of the event is the Walker Cup Match. It is organised by The R&A and the United States Golf Association (USGA).

The trophy is named after George H. Walker who was a president of the United States Golf Association (USGA) in the 1920s and an organiser of the event.

The Walker Cup was first played in 1922 at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, New York.

The competition was initiated to foster international goodwill through golf and to create a top-level amateur competition similar to the Ryder Cup, which is contested by professional golfers.

Over the years, the Walker Cup has featured many players who went on to have illustrious professional careers, including Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, and Rory McIlroy. It is considered a significant stepping stone for amateur golfers aiming to turn professional.

The Walker Cup is played over two days.

The playing format is a combination of foursomes (alternate shot) and singles competitions.

The team that accumulates the most points wins the Walker Cup.

As per 2023: the USA leads the series, 39 to 9. One match tied,.
