Ladbrokes offered Gerry McIlroy odds of 500-1 on the wager that Rory would win the Claret Jug by the year 2014. Rory won in 2014.
Gerry wagered £200 resulting in a £100,000 pay out. Gerry (and Rory) were from a working class background and the size of the wager was a significant sum for Gerry.
Gerry and mum Rosie are credited with being a crucial influence on Rory’s success. He is glad now to be able to say “I’ll do whatever it takes to look after them.”
Rory won at Royal Liverpool, leading wire to wire. No doubt there were moments of doubt though, as both Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia made a run, eventually finishing 2 shots back.
